I know some of you are dealing with stress. With the economy in turmoil, an unresponsive political class, and a culture that places a fairly low price on the value of a human life, it’s only natural for some of us to buckle under the weight of a harsh world. Not everyone succumbs to depression, but everyone has to cope with stress now and then.

To help you out, I’ve pulled up my sleeves and dug through the internet to provide you with some of the latest stress related articles. Hopefully some of these will help you out. You’ll find a few studies, a few stories, and a few self-help pieces. A little bit of everything, really.

And now for the round-up…

Studies about stress

Over at Modern Medicine, we learn that mouse pups who are raised in stressful environments are permanently changed by the experience.

In a similar vein, Psych Central reports that childhood stressraises allergy risks.

Back to studies about four legged critters, some researchers have been exploring the neural circuitry of stress induced insomniain rats. That study is courtesy of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Over at Eureka Alerts, we’re informed that chewing gum helps reduce stress. Keep in mind that the study was published by the Wrigley Science Institute. It’d be nice to see some studies from other researchers backing this one up.

The Telegraph lets us know that stress makes people more superstitious. That doesn’t sound too outlandish. If you’re under pressure, you are more inclined to flail your mind around, looking for something to latch on to to keep you steady.

Another Psych Central report talks about how police officers are often more stressed out than the general population. Not entirely surprising. It’d be nice if our politicians would adopt policies that undermined the stressful aspects of policing work. Maybe cops should be encouraged to take up zen?

Natural Product Insider points us to a survey showing
that the stress levels are on the rise. Shocking, but true.
